The community of Chula Vista is located just ten minutes south of downtown San Diego and stretches to the border with Mexico. The town was founded in the late 1880’s – building lots sold for only $300 at the time. It was discovered that lemons grew exceedingly well in the rich soil and Mediterranean climate and the town soon became the world’s largest producer of lemons. Over time the groves gave way to aircraft production, kelp harvesting, and US Naval facilities.
With a population of 225,000 it’s the 2nd largest city in San Diego County. Bounded on the SW by San Diego Bay, and San Miguel Mountain to the east, the city has much to offer the condo buyer. San Diego’s busy downtown with its government and financial district, clubs, restaurants, museums, Balboa Park, Zoo and Horton Plaza Mall are but minutes away to the north. Tijuana Mexico is but minutes south down Interstate 5.
Chula Vista has two beautiful marinas with restaurants, a yacht club, waterfront parks and a Nature Center - complete with shark and ray tanks, local history, flora and fauna exhibits. Whale Watching, Harbor Tour and Sports fishing operators are based in the Marinas. The Coors Amphitheater is an outdoor performing arts theater with seating for 20,000. Families will enjoy the newly built 32-acre water park featuring 22 action–packed rides for the family. Golfers have four courses to play on in the city plus others in the surrounding communities. Chula Vista is home to the country’s only multi-sport U.S. Olympic Training Center. Athletes train for competition year-around for a variety of sports including rowing, canoe/kayak, field hockey, tennis, track and field, archery, soccer, cycling, and softball. In recent decades the old city center has been renovated with trendy bistros, offices and restaurants. Many condos and town home developments have been built in the town due to its desirable proximity to downtown San Diego. Condominium buyers have many options ranging from converted apartment buildings to new low-rise projects with one to four bedrooms units. Town homes can be found in lushly landscaped gated communities with community pools, tennis and other recreation options. Chula Vista is progressive with plans underway to build a new four-year university to augment the existing 2-year college and a major waterfront park and marina expansion. The San Diego Charger Football team is negotiating to build a new regional stadium at present with the remaining issue to be decided – whether or not to rename the team – The Chula Vista Chargers.
